In drilling fluid, polyacrylamide can be used as following:

1. As viscosity increaser.
Polyacrylamide can increase the viscosity of drilling mud and better control the mud densites, flocculate the drilling cuttings and clay. And during the downtime, the cutting will be hold in suspension thereby not causing major problems to the drilling bit.
Suggested products: PAM with high molecular weight and high anionic degree.

2. As sealing agent.
Under the effect of Al3+, Fe3+, Ca3+ ions, this product will be linked, and the partial high molecular compound will be changed from linear into three-dimensional, not dissolving in water, and absorbing on the side well to plug the gap and to prevent drilling fluid aganist leakage.
Suggested products: PHPA with midium high molecular weight and medium anionic degree.

3. As fluid loss control agent.
Polyacrylamide can form mud cake to low the permeability, in order to prevent mudside, and decrease the stratum pollution.
